A Day in the Life of a Gator in Kissimmee

Rise & Shine!

7 a.m.: No alarms needed for us alligators! I start my day the moment the sun comes up, enjoying the warmth as it heats up the land. As a cold-blooded reptile, I rely on the sun to give me the energy I need. The early morning hours are perfect for basking by the water, soaking up the Florida sunshine. A few quick swims to cool off, and I’m ready to take on the day.

What's for Lunch?

12 p.m.: After a peaceful morning of sunbathing, it’s time for my first meal. I don’t need a big breakfast like some mammals because I’m cold-blooded and can regulate my energy levels by absorbing heat. For lunch, I enjoy a variety of meals — young alligators feast on fish, snails, and insects, while the bigger gators (like me) can enjoy a selection of fish, turtles, birds, and even mammals!

Afternoon Hang or a Solo Swim?

2 p.m.: After lunch, it’s time to decide — do I want to hang out with the other gators or swim solo? Most big gators like me prefer a bit of alone time, but if you’re looking to see a variety of gators — big and small — Gatorland is the place to go. With more than 2,000 alligators, it's a wildlife lover’s dream, and you might even catch a glimpse of rare albino alligators!

4 p.m.: Now it's time to check on my family. During the warmer months, the female gators build nests to keep their eggs warm. These nests are made from surrounding plants, and the temperature inside the nest determines the sex of the baby gators — cooler temperatures create females, and hotter temps create males. It’s an essential part of our gator lifestyle!

Good Day & Good Night

8 p.m.: As the sun sets, I begin to head back to the water. I like to take my time, slowly slithering across the land, stretching out before I slip into the cool, calm waters for the night. A gator’s day ends as peacefully as it began — but the adventure doesn’t stop for everyone!
