As you walk down Broadway in Downtown Kissimmee, you will notice a large horse statue standing tall outside a brick building. For an impressive 137 years, this iconic figure signaled to everyone that they had reached Makinson Hardware, the local go-to destination for a range of hardware supplies, nails, lawnmowers, and everything in between.
Today, that same building is home to 1881 Restaurant & Bar—a watering hole where locals and visitors alike gather for happy hour, delicious food, and a bit of Kissimmee history.
The Legacy of Makinson Hardware

Founded in 1884, Makinson Hardware remained Florida’s oldest hardware store until it closed in 2021. The hardware store was established by William Burroughs, also known as W.B. Makinson, a Maryland native and one of Osceola County’s early pioneers. Makinson arrived in Kissimmee in 1883 and was involved in various trades, including supporting local farmers, fishermen, and the cattle industry.
The store was a cornerstone of the Kissimmee community as it was the only hardware store for many years nearby. It was the kind of place where folks could grab what they needed, put it on the tab, and settle up later.
Inside the 1881 Restaurant & Bar Today

While the tools and tractors are long gone, the spirit of Makinson Hardware lives on inside the 1881 Restaurant & Bar. This reimagined space honors Kissimmee’s ranching roots with vintage photos of cowboys gathered around campfires and rustic touches that nod to the building’s past.
But don’t let its history fool you! With its modern flair, comfy seating, and lively atmosphere, 1881 is now the perfect place to gather for a night out with friends, a family dinner, or a laid-back date night.
The menu at 1881 is all about classic American comfort food with a Kissimmee twist. Each dish brings a little local flavor to the table. Craving something hearty? Order the Kowboy Jake, a juicy 12-oz. strip steak that’ll have you feeling like you just got done wrangling some cattle.
Pair it with a handcrafted cocktail like the Smoky Kowboy — a bold, flavorful spin on the classic Paper Plane. And nope, that’s not a typo. Around here, we proudly spell Kowboy with a “K” as part of Kissimmee tradition!
