The Legacy of Makinson Hardware
Founded in 1884, Makinson Hardware was the oldest hardware store in Florida until its closure in 2021. The hardware store was established by William Burroughs (also known as W.B.) Makinson, a Maryland native and one of Osceola County’s early pioneers. Makinson arrived in Kissimmee in 1883 and was involved in various trades, including supporting local farmers, fishermen, and the cattle industry. The store was a cornerstone of the Kissimmee community as it was the only hardware store for many years nearby. It was the kind of place where locals would put goods “on their tab” and pay for them later.
