Here in Kissimmee, life may be a little different right now, but one thing remains the same: Kissimmee is home to some absolutely incredible sunsets and sunrises. Over the years, vacationers captured plenty of beautiful, sunny shots to share with us. Now, we want to share some of our favorites with you. And along the way, you might even learn a little bit about why our sunny skies are so special.
Kissimmee’s cotton-candy skies are as sweet as they sound, but do you know what causes them? The illuminating answer has a lot to do with where the sun is in the sky. Light from the sun is made up of all the colors of the rainbow, and these colors travel to Kissimmee on different wavelengths. As you might expect, it’s quite a distance from the sun to Central Florida, and along the way, the wavelengths bounce off of all sorts of molecules in the atmosphere.
As the sun sets, these wavelengths have to travel further, bouncing off even more particles including dust, oxygen, and nitrogen. These chance meetings cause some of the wavelengths to scatter before you’re able to see them. So, guess which color-carrying wavelength is most prone to scattering? (If you answered blue, you’re correct.)
With blue light scattering away, colors like red, orange, and pink each get their turn to shine — and we sure are glad they do. As much as we love our blue skies, the pink hues of Kissimmee’s early evenings really are a sight to see. Just take a look for yourself.
Red Sky at Night, Kissimmee’s Delight
You may have heard the famous expression, “Red sky at night, sailor’s delight. Red sky in the morning, sailors take warning.” But did you know it’s more than just a clever rhyme? There’s actually scientific evidence to back it up.
Generally speaking, weather systems across the United States follow the jet stream and travel from west to east. Because the sun sets in the west, its light has to travel through any potential weather systems before it reaches Kissimmee. If a sunset is particularly red, it means the sun’s light is reflecting off the clouds in Kissimmee’s early-evening skies — a good indicator there are no storm clouds coming in. Just like that, it’s clear skies ahead.
So, the next time you’re in Kissimmee, take note. Not only are these red-sky sunsets a sight to see, they’re also a sign that another beautiful day in Kissimmee is on the horizon.
