Many artists dream of becoming a National Geographic photographer, and Ami Vitale is living that dream. She agreed to come to Central Florida and join The Kissimmee Experience for the season finale. We took her behind the scenes at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, a picturesque tour of Bok Tower Gardens, and finally, since Ami is all about taking risks, an impromptu kayaking tour of The Paddling Center at Shingle Creek.

Ami Vitale

Upon meeting Ami Vitale for the first time, she’ll probably tell you she’s an introvert. While this is true, she has a knack for meeting and understanding people. Photography isn’t just a passion and a profession to her, she utilizes it to learn about others and tell their stories in a way that feels real, raw, and natural. Having been born in Florida, she familiarized herself with the natural world at a young age by finding interest in what was in her backyard. From there, she knew she wanted to travel the world and tell stories through photography, and she has done just that. With an extensive career full of accolades and achievements, her focus is now on Vital Impacts, a non-profit that uses art and storytelling to support people and organizations who are protecting our planet.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom

Most folks know Disney's Animal Kingdom for the iconic Tree of Life, the thrilling Expedition Everest, the intricate theming and architecture throughout, or the delicious Rainforest Café by the entrance. You may not have experienced their Conservation Station, an attraction located in Rafiki’s Planet Watch which allows visitors to learn about animal habitats and observe veterinarians care for the animals on the property.

The Kissimmee Experience show host Jen Bonner took Ami behind the scenes to meet with Dr. Scott Terrell and explore a day in the life of the Conservation Station. The attraction allows guests to see the Veterinary Treatment Room behind glass, and sometimes the experts conduct procedures for viewers to see. The Nutrition Center and Science Center are also on display for park guests to observe even more animal care activity.

Bok Tower Gardens

The Singing Tower

One of the largest and heaviest instruments in the world is called a carillon, and due to their size, they are fairly rare, with only about 185 carillons in North America and approximately 600 worldwide. In fact, only four people (called carilloneurs) have ever played the instrument, situated on the eighth floor of a 205-foot tower with 60 tuned bells ranging from 16 pounds to almost 12 tons. At the time of its construction in the 1920’s, the 205-foot Singing Tower at Bok Tower Gardens was the heaviest instrument in the world. Guests can hear recitals daily throughout the property surrounding the tower as the impressive visual centerpiece.

Take a Moment

One of the loveliest parts of Bok Tower Gardens is the grassy pasture behind the Singing Tower. Dotted with live oaks trailing with Spanish moss, it’s the perfect place to take a leisurely stroll and enjoy the seemingly ever-flowing gentle breeze. There, Jen and Ami paused to discuss Ami’s love for all forms of nature. She reflected on her life and career, the importance of taking a moment to breathe, and practicing relaxation and connection to the world around her.

The Paddling Center

After spending two days with Ami, the show’s cast and crew couldn’t help but feel inspired to try new things. The team planned to capture a leisurely final interview using The Paddling Center at Shingle Creek as a backdrop, but the excitement surrounding Ami and her adventurous presence led to something entirely different. The crew discussed putting the cameras into their own kayaks, but in the end Ami and Jen took off and the cameras stayed on shore. Jen’s nerves showed, understandably, since hosting the show is a big responsibility and can be difficult during a less-than-comfortable activity.

In the end, the segment filmed beautifully, and everyone left safe and dry thanks to The Paddling Center’s expert staff and guides. The lesson? Always be ready to embrace the unexpected, take risks, and jump into uncomfortable situations. Life will always be full of challenges and surprises, and the only way through is to dive right in.
