Here in Kissimmee, we’re known for our Central Florida weather–that’s year-round sunshine with an average of 236 sunny days every year. But even the Sunshine State sees an occasional bit of rain. You might find yourself in a quick-moving sun shower that only lasts a few minutes, or find yourself in a rare patch of rainy weather. We know there’s a lot of planning that goes into making vacations, so we want to give you some practical tips to have in your back pocket that make for good rainy weather fun!  Whether you’re staying at a Kissimmee vacation home for your family getaway, or at a hotel near the theme parks, don’t let a bit of rain spoil your vacation. Here are seven things to inspire family fun until the sun comes back out!

1. VISIT A MUSEUM

When the rain starts pourin’, it’s time to get learnin’! Here’s a free fact: Kissimmee is the World Headquarters for Tupperware. Yup! You heard that right – the sealable kitchenware phenomenon has its head offices and also a museum here in Kissimmee, just one mile north of Gatorland. The Tupperware Confidence Center is a quirky museum that showcases the brand’s history and also makes for interesting conversation when you come home from vacation (“Where did you go on your vacation?” “Oh, the Tupperware Museum.” “What?!”). Hit it up on your way into Downtown Kissimmee, or pair it with a trip to Gatorland once the rain lets up.

Science-loving kids and family members will enjoy the SKELETONS: Museum of Osteology, with more than 500 skeletons and lots of interactive displays to learn about how we’re put together. If you don’t find the rain very ‘humerus,’ don’t worry! It’s going ‘tibia’ okay.

Fans of American Military history should look to the Museum of Military History in Kissimmee. It’s interpretive center and interactive exhibits, along with war artifacts provide a way for people of all ages and backgrounds to learn and understand the American Military experience throughout the years, while inspiring a sense of fun and adventure.  It’s also free for Active Duty members of the military and children under 5.

You might also want to stop by the Kissimmee Air Museum, which has 22 aircraft on display, and some historic WWII artifacts. The museum is run by Warbird Adventures, who (on a sunny day) will take you out for a flight in classic military aircraft. First-time fliers welcome!

Flying in the sky not taking you high enough? Then the Kennedy Space Center Visitor’s Complex is the next place to go. This gateway to space will bring your whole family face to face with shuttles such as the famous Space Shuttle Atlantic, and get you on a first-name basis with astronauts in the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame. See? The sky isn’t the limit.

2. HIT UP THE SHOPS

Of course, shopping is fun rain or shine, but overcast weather is a good excuse to spend some time finding that perfect souvenir, or outlet store deal.

If you love hunting for a bargain, we suggest hitting up Orlando Premium Outlets on International Drive, where you’ll find more than 180 name-brand outlet stores. Lake Buena Vista Factory Stores  is a shopping village just minutes away from Walt Disney World, and is often reachable by a ‘shopping shuttle.’ You’ll leave with bags bearing names like: Saks OFF Fifth, Neiman Marcus Last Call, Victoria’s Secret, Kate Spade New York, Nike, Adidas, Aeropostale, Calvin Klein, Converse, Eddie Bauer, Fossil, Gap, Under Armor, and more.

Combine boutique shopping with arcade games and activities for the whole family, by heading to Old Town for a taste of classic 50s and 60s Florida. While known today for its atmospheric amusements and retro rides, Old Town started as a shopping district, and today its unique shops still shine bright.

Historic Downtown Kissimmee and St. Cloud feature a variety of antique shops, and local art galleries. The tree-lined front street of Celebration Town Center also has a number of tempting specialty boutiques, and its charming facades make for a memorable walk! Celebration is the town that the Walt Disney Company built, after all. Giving you the best of small-town America with a modern twist.

3. EXPERIENCE AN INDOOR ATTRACTION

Creative kids in the family will love the Crayola Experience, an interactive and hands-on series of 25 activities, including a glow-in-the-dark drawing room and the chance to name and wrap your very own Crayola crayon! Play in colorful wax rain and melt crayons together–the only limit is your imagination. This indoor attraction also has the convenience of being located in the Florida Mall, Central Florida’s largest shopping center, so once you’re all colored out, there’s lots of other spots for the family to visit.

For a rainy day, what could be more classic entertainment that bowling and burgers? Splitsville Luxury Lanes in Disney Springs ups the ante, serving upscale sushi, pizza, and deluxe burgers alongside a yummy kids’ menu. We’ll take the ‘Giant Cake,’ please.

Feeling the need for speed? K1 Speed Indoor Karting is where would-be racers of all ages and experiences can arrive and drive. Race up to 45 miles per hour and discover your inner stock car driver.

4. DINNER AND A SHOW

Don’t feel like just because it’s raining you have to go inside and play charades! Let professionals provide the entertainment for you.

Whether you like seeing epic knights duel for the brave maiden, or you love to solve mysteries over your mousse, our themed dinner shows are sure to keep you and your family entertained (and well fed) indoors. No matter what you’re feeling, there’s a dinner show for you.

5. EXPERIENCE THE THEME PARKS IN THE RAIN

So, you’ve only got a few days in town, and the day you planned to explore our world-famous theme parks ends up being a rainy one. No worries! Not only will it make for a good family story, but many of the rides and attractions that make up our theme parks are housed indoors anyway. This is also the perfect opportunity to flaunt your poncho style.

Ponchos can be purchased at grocery stores and gift shops around town, or from the theme parks. Put a few in your purse and hit the parks! Prepare to make memories.

6. WAIT FOR THE RAINBOWS

We’ve alluded to the fact that our sun showers can be deceiving! Often when they start visitors will nix their plans for the day, only to have them clear up moments later! Summer storms especially can pass in a matter of minutes, so your vacation isn’t likely to get rained out, and the post-shower skies can be spectacular!

If it’s raining at dusk or at night, you might even be treated to one of our famous lightning shows! If it does start to thunder and lightning, we recommend you find a safe spot indoors to enjoy the show, then head back out once it clears.

7. MAKE SUNNY DAY PLANS

This list just goes to show—there’s more than fair weather entertainment in Central Florida! When the sun comes back out, we recommend you talk a walk in Nature, or visit our Outdoor Adventures. It’s a good idea to book a tee time on one of our famous golf courses, too.

Rain or shine, we hope our guide helps you Experience Kissimmee!
